Billabong was started by Gordon Merchant in 1973 on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia. The company originally started off selling board shorts to local surf shops in the area, that were designed and created out of Merchant's home. Today, Billabong owns hundreds of retail locations across the globe, and sponsors some of the top surfers in the sport.
